One Class,One Goal ---(Ms.Miller)

Second grade this year has grown so that it now includes 20 students from all over the world. We have students from China, students who have lived in China most of their lives but were born in other countries or have parents from other countries, and children from Korea, Mongolia and America. Students range from those who have spoken English their whole lives, to those who are now learning it for the first time. New friendships are forming despite differences in English language ability and previous cultural experiences.

The variety of second grader’s backgrounds can also be seen in how they spent their summers. Some students were in Canada or America, while others traveled through China or to Korea or Russia. Some saw the Olympics in person while others watched it on tv. Just like the Olympics’ phrase One World, One Dream, the second graders are one class, with one goal: learn English and Chinese at KinStar!

Grade 4 Class stands by the their goals for the year

The grade 4 students took some time to reflect on a few goals that they would like to accomplish this year.  They understood that it is important to set goals for ourselves and to work hard to achieve them.  Here are some of the things the students in grade 4 had to say…      Ms.Hicks

Jungsoo: “My goal is to learn more about science.  I will achieve my goal by studying hard and by listening to my teacher”.

Alice: “My goal is to learn more English.  This is a good goal for me because then I can talk more with my friends”.

Clarisse: “My goal is to be a good student, listen to the teacher, and to be more independent.  To make my goal happen I will work hard and do my work when I get home.  When I finish my work I can play.  I also am trying to be independent and not rely too much on other people”.

Sam: “My goal is to be better at soccer.  Three reasons why this is a worthwhile goal is that I could earn a lot of money, I could play matches, and I could play in the World Cup.”

Michael: “My goal is to be good at English.  I will reach my goal by listening to my teachers and reading English books”.

Oliver: “My goal is to have more friends.  To make my goal happen I will be nice, kind, and not get angry easily”.

Anna: “My goal is to learn more English and Chinese.  An obstacle that might get in my way is that I’m learning 3 languages at one time.  It is a worthwhile goal because I can be a translator for my parents”.

Mathew: “My goal is to learn how to play soccer because I like soccer, it will keep me healthy, and it’s good to be on a team”.

Annette: “My goal is to have more self-control.  To make my goal happen I will always try my best, always work hard, never ever give up and to think about my work”.

Ethan: “My goal is to improve and learn more carefully.  This is a good goal for me because I can improve more and become more like an adult”.

Brian: “My goal is to learn more soccer.  I will reach my goal by trying every day”.

Youngmin: “My goal is to play the piano well.  To make my goal happen I will practice every day, listen to piano music, listen to my teacher and buy piano books”.

Grade 6 Students hard at work in the science lab

This week in 6th/7th grade science class the students enjoyed the use of their new laboratory.  Lab work is an essential part of the learning environment of life sciences. Each lab was completed with a sense of accomplishment and a thorough understanding  of new knowledge about science. Over the 2008-2009 school year each class will have the opportunity to use the lab to further their knowledge and enjoyment of science.

 New challenges in I.T.Class---(Mr.Hanson)

                                     Jungsoo in I.T. Class

This year in the information technology class there will be many challenges ahead. We started the year learning about the history of computers. From the beginnings of calculation using the abacus to modern day personal computers that we all use in our homes. Before we could get started in using any software all the students needed to learn the parts that make up a computer.  For the lower grades students learned the pieces of computers that we use. For the upper grades we learned the components that are inside a computer and what function they perform. With computer basics finished all the grades have moved onto the keyboarding unit. Grades 4 to 7 use the Mavis Beacon Keyboarding software for accuracy and speed. Mavis Beacon  monitors students  progress, flags their weak spots and offers challenging lessons to help students continue improving their keyboarding skills. Grade 1 to 3 are using Jumpstart typing software. The main focus of this software is accuracy and not speed. It aims to provide students with the skill to type accurately without looking at the keyboard. Grades 4 to 7 have also started a word processing project. The aim of this project to learn how to insert items into a document. The result being a poster inviting people to visit their country for international. Keep checking the I.T. room for more fun an exciting projects to follow this year!

 ESL starts writing---(Mr.Hanson)

Grade_3_tea_and_max.jpg

With summer over now students have jumped right back into working hard in their studies. In ESL classes we have writing journals that we must fill out everyday. For the students this work load was a little intimidating at first. But over the past week students have found that writing isn’t that dull after all but can be fun. At the beginning of each class students read to the rest of the class what they have wrote the evening before. The students have begun to take pride in sharing their writing with the rest of the class and the feeling of competition has arisen who can write the most on a single topic. Keep up the good work guys!

 Sunshine Class---(Marisa Bacchiochi)

Sunshine_class_circle_time.jpg

In Sunshine class we begin each day together with circle time. This is the time where the children are asked to sit down and have an informal discussion with their teacher and their peers. The topics vary from day to day but one subject that is always included is our feelings. The children are encouraged to express how they are feeling (happy, sad, angry, silly, tired, sick….) they are also asked to explain, to the best of their ability, why they are feeling that way. If a student is unable to verbalize his emotions he is encouraged to draw how he feels and together the class will try to name the feeling illustrated. Circle time allows the children to practice their verbal English skills and build on their vocabulary. It also helps the children familiarize themselves with each other and it provides an opportunity for the children to gain confidence when speaking in front of groups.

Middle School Writing Samples---(Eiri, Grade6, 韩国)

Middle School students studied a picture titled “Horse in a Field” by Paulus Potter, a Dutch artist.  They wrote stories to accompany the picture.   This month’s story, “Hungry Horses,” comes from Eric Kim in Grade Six.   Come to the fourth floor to see everyone’s work!

—————————

A long time ago, there was one house.  In the house are two horses, but the master is away.  He doesn’t give them food so the horses are very hungry and angry and want to go outside and find food by themselves.  One day the master wants to go to another place, but the two horses are gone!   They go outside and find some food but one hunter sees the horses and the hunter wants to eat some horse tongue.   He catches the horses and cuts out the horses’ tongues so that horses can’t eat anything.  They just look at the field everyday and are so hungry that they die.   God thinks that the horses were very sad so he uses the magic to the bones to make them.   They stand before the master’s house.  The master is very angry because they ran away before, so everyday he hits the horses until they are dead again.   God thinks they are sad again.  He makes the bones alive again.  They stand at the hunter’s house and he cuts out their tongues again.  They die so God is angry.  He makes the horses into toys and gives them to kids, but they were broken.   Now this toy can feel very sad and if some horses are going there, this horse sees the field and cries.
