On December the 19th the whole school was a hive of activity as students and teachers were running around preparing for the Annual Christmas Concert, and what a great concert it was!
Many parents came to see their children perform, some children acted in plays like Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer or learnt about Hanukah. The kindergarten children also entertained us with a song and a dance about bathing. We even had a recorder group play jingle bells and a super energetic hip hop dance group that made everyone feel alive. The teachers also surprised the audience with a special Jingle Bell Rock number.!
The concert ended with everyone singing “We wish you a Merry Christmas” and a visit by Santa Claus who came all the way from the North Pole to give our special prizes to the students..!
Everyone then enjoyed a Class Christmas Party!.!
What a great Day!

On Thursday the 8th of November, the KinStar students went on a trip around the world. First, they made sure that their passports were ready and then off they went.
They were able to visit, the USA, China, Russia, the Maldives, Brazil, Japan and Canada. Students were able to taste traditional food, learn a song and even a word or two in a foreign language. The students had been working hard learning about these countries for many weeks and were very good at teaching the visiting students all about the interesting facts that they had learned.
I hope that by reading about their experiences and seeing the photos you will feel like you joined them on the trip around the world. Don’t forget to ask your child which country they liked best and why.
A big thank you goes to all of our teachers who put in a lot of hard work!
Best regards,

The Kindergarten decided to teach us all about America. It started with a very fierce customs checks … no metal objects were allowed inside. Then we were able to relax and learn how to sing a very famous song “Home on the Range”. Tthe students sang very well. We were also rewarded with some typical American food such as hotdogs and chips.

What? Where? Do you know anything about the Maldives? Well, Grade 2B does.
This was a great opportunity for students to learn about a country made up of small islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Students learnt all about the fun activities like snorkeling and diving and were even given a change to go fishing. What fun! Some students even caught fish (others caught an old boot) but we were all able to feast on fish sandwiches.
I think I know where I want to go for my next holidays!

The Grade 5/6 students welcomed their visitors with a warm “ko ni chi wa”! Students were then invited to taste some delicious sushi rolls before attempting to take on the challenge of Japanese origami. Some students even attempted to make butterflies!
Students also were able to see some samples of Japanese gardens, learn about the geography of Japan, the weather, national holidays and the different writing systems.
Wow. What a lot of interesting information there is to learn about Japan! |

Grade 2 A decided to treat everyone to some Russian caviar on Russian bread ... mmm mmm a new taste sensation for many. Russia is the largest country in the world and it’s capital is Moscow. It even has some interesting instruments like the Balalaika and the Lira.

Grade 1 decided to teach us about China. The best way to learn about China is to eat some Chinese food ... yum yum!! We also tested our knowledge of the map of China by trying to draw it blind folded … very challenging.
The students were also able to try making dumplings with the Chinese teachers. Everyone had fun and was able to eat a few dumplings too!!

This was a very exciting country to visit. The ESL students had been learning a lot. They told us about the Canadian Maple leaf (and we were able to taste some real Canadian maple syrup), the Beaver and the Canadian Mounties (police officers who ride horses).
We also sang the Canadian National Anthem before being invited to participate in a fun game of Hockey.

The Grade 3/4 class welcomed us to Brazil by their fierce looking Brazilian guards with masks and head decorations on. Once they knew that we were harmless tourists traveling the world they said “ola” and let us pass. Did you know that Brazil is the largest country in South America and that the national language is Portuguese?
The students played a game going down the great Amazon River!

First graders waited impatiently for Halloween to come this week. Finally, at the end of the day Friday, they got to celebrate. Before the time finally came they learned a little bit more about Halloween in Social Studies. They learned that it is a tradition in the US for kids to dress up on Halloween and go “trick-or-treating.” They also learned how to say ghost, witch, candy, and other important words. On Friday before the party they made masks. When it was finally time to trick-or-treat everyone had a great costume. Witches and wizards seemed to be the most popular this year. Once everyone had collected goodies in their trick-or-treat bags we headed upstairs, where the costumed first graders had a great time searching for eyeballs, going on a witch hunt, and making bats and witches in the craft area.
On October 19, students in the Grade 3 and 4 class went to the Sunshine orphanage to pick dates and donate to the orphanage. Students and their parents were very generous to the orphanage and donated much more than the required 20 RMB. During the trip, students spread out around the large date farm and filled a bag with as many dates as they could. Students enjoyed hunting for the ripest dates and enjoyed spending time with their classmates, teachers, and some parent volunteers. After returning from the trip, the students took the time to reflect and write about their experiences on the trip. Students drew pictures of the fun that they had picking dates.
On Thursday the 20th of September we had our first parents cooking club.
We were very happy to have Cui Ying teach us how to make traditional Beijing “Jiajiang mian”.
We learnt how to chop finely and to mix special ingredients together. Finally we all sat down to a delicious lunch together.
Next Month, October 11th we will learn some Western baking skills. Please e-mail me if you would like to join me at imelda@kinstar.org

Dear Parents and Students,
We would like to encourage our students to explore the world of reading outside of school. Reading provides hours of pleasure and learning and consequently, reading should be encouraged on a daily basis. Reading as a family for 15 to 30 minutes a day shows your children that you value and enjoy reading, and it also sets a good example for your children.
This list of titles has been compiled by Dr. Rashmini Segarajasinghe-Ernest. It includes both fiction and nonfiction books by some of the best authors for children and young adults. The list includes multiple levels and also brief descriptions to assist you in selecting titles that would be appropriate for your child.
Books on this list are evaluated annually by grade-level committees in the United States for their a) appropriate content, b) interest and c) learning value. Committee members rely on recommendations from standard, professionally prepared evaluation aids and on input from students and teachers. The KinStar reading list was complied accessing the above sources as well as Dr. Segarajasinghe-Ernest’s and Principal Cohen’s knowledge and expertise. A conscious effort is made to appeal to the broad range of interests, maturity levels, and reading abilities of students.
In most cases the number of books by any given author is limited to one or two per grade level list. An older title with superior literary quality may remain on the list despite newer publications by the same author. Before reading a recommended author's book that does not appear on the student’s grade list, readers should be aware that authors often write for multiple interest and age levels. Books that are part of a series are also noted, but not all books in a series are appropriate at the indicated grade level.
Students may find that some titles that are required reading for their classes appear on this list. Be advised that if a book for required reading is selected for independent reading, it may have to be re-read with the class at a later date.
This list is offered as one possible source of reading guidance. Additional lists of award winners and recommended books may be obtained from your school or public librarian. We hope that books from this list bring students many hours of enjoyment and encourage the life-long love of reading.
Help us guide your child into the joys of reading.
