On March 22nd, the KinStar community had the enjoyable experience of listening to the class winners give their speeches about a wide range of topics. Each year, KinStar students work hard to write and prepare a speech. They learn important public speaking skills as well as different writing techniques. Each class held their own competition and sent two finalists to represent their grade.
From grade 1, we heard Chante and Kelsey, from grade 2, Tazmin and William, representing grade 3 were Chris and Jackie, and from grade four we heard from Tea and YuQui.
The second half began with Shannon and Ethan from grade 5, Melody and Sabrina from grade 6, Yuhan and Jocelyn from grade 7 and Jason and Jeffery from grade 8. The audience learned about topics such as the coral reefs, special brothers, loveable dogs, helpfulness, world records, and many more. We are all very proud of our speakers and are already looking forward to next year’s competition!! Congratulations to all of the participants!!!

In IT (information technology) class grade 7 and 8 the students looked at famous photos
in history. Using the magic of Photoshop the students discovered some little known facts that were hidden in these pictures but through Photoshop have now come to light. (Look on p 18)
Some of the tools that the students learned to use were color balancing to match colors of different photos as well as techniques using layers while using Photoshop. For a complete gallery of all the re-discovered history photos come to the IT room!

“Maybe atoms move,” answered Phoebe Turner. No one had told her this. The teacher did not mention it. What she did was transfer her knowledge of what matter is made of to how ice can become water.
We may say to ourselves that this is simple: ice melts. But, ice is a solid. It is not a liquid, just like a book or paper. However, Vincent Cai would be able to tell you clearly that water is made of different kinds of atoms, “hydrogen and oxygen,” and that a book is not made of the same atoms.
So why does the ice melt?
Students in 3rd grade are learning that matter is made of atoms and there are three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.
What the students have been trying to understand is how a solid can become a liquid. Through their own research and their own thinking some have come to the conclusion that atoms move and this might be the reason why ice can become water.
We have been observing melted ice for 5 days now and have seen that something else is happening. Something is happening to the water! Everyday we are
seeing less and less
of it...Why?

Grade 1 has been practicing the play “The
Giving Tree” based on the book by Shel
Silverstein, a favorite American children’s poet. This story illustrates the great
generosity of a tree to a boy. Generosity is giving something and being happy about doing
so.
The tree gave so much to the boy: she gave herself to play with, her apples to sell,
her branches to make a house, her trunk to make a boat, and even her stump to sit on. She
was happy to give to the boy because she loved him, and she found joy in giving, most of the
time. Sometimes she was not happy because she missed the boy and because he seemed
ungrateful.
May we learn to be generous like the tree, and may we find the same joy in
giving.
May we also be thankful for what we are given! We are given so much, especially by
our families. Because of them we have a loving home and a good education.
Thank you
families!

Hello again to all parents, students and Kinstar staff. The year of the Tiger has begun and students have already made many beautiful artworks and they keep on making a lot more!
Here is a short overview of what you can expect to see the coming month:
The little
ones of Grade 1 are still busy making their cardboard city and such a big project always takes a long time. Meanwhile they have made some artistic “Mozaic Animals”.
Grade 2 made fantastic big paper faces and are now fully enjoying the art of printmaking, using “My City” as a subject.
Grade 3 finished their big self-portraits: many happy faces to be seen in the lunchroom and the hallways. Now they started making a book cover and a giant cut out paper project!
Grade 4 finished their landscapes in an explosion of colors and so did grade 7+8. It goes to show that they were truly inspired again! Now they are working in small groups to make environmental posters by using the playful style of American draftsman Keith Haring.
Grade 5 finished sewing and stuffing their dream creature pillows, showing us plenty of fantasy! You will never have seen painted pillows like theirs before!
Grade 6 are doing the same artist study about Keith Haring and they are using his “puppet-people” to make a painting to put on their locker. I’m sure that this time they will get the opportunity to amaze us! They also made advertisement mini-posters using a graffiti style with Chinese, Korean & English characters.
Grade 7 and 8 are done designing a record cover for their favorite music band and just started a new art unit about symbolist painter Gustav Klimt. The goal is to decorate the Library Walls with their own symbolic “Trees of Life”, it’s a challenge!
During this 2nd semester students get the chance to practice the art of Japanese brush and ink illustration. They are enjoying the classes and exploring the many techniques of how to use the ink brush. It is a very spontaneous way of drawing but there is no room for mistakes: one has to try and draw an instant and fluent line with every single stroke of the brush. Educationaly it is an excellent way for kids to learn how to focus better in a creative & playful way: It requires the same intense amount of concentration needed for meditation and looks easier than it actually is.

一、爱护环境卫生,不乱丢乱吐,不乱涂乱画;
二、维护绿化,认养花树,不践踏草坪,不摧残花草树木;
三、珍惜每一滴水,节约用水,别让水空流,节约用电,不过早开灯,人走灯熄;
四、人人尽力,避免噪音,共创宁静环境;
五、少用一次性制品,珍惜纸张;
六、爱惜粮食,不随便乱倒饭菜;
七、推动垃圾分类回收,让垃圾变成资源;
八、珍惜资源,物尽其用,一物多用;

And the winner of this year’s spelling bee for grades 5-8 goes to…Christopher Zhu!
On March 12th KinStar hosted its
annual school-wide spelling bee.
The excitement was intense as two representatives from each grade took the stage. In the end, Christopher out-spelled his fellow contestants, earning him the title of spelling bee champion.
Congratulations Christopher!
If you would like to read some “first class” limericks, come check them out in the 6th grade class!
There once was a sixth grade class,
who had to write limericks to pass.
They thought up some rhymes
And spent so much time,
Their limericks are now first class!

STAR class is learning about the weather and has spent the last few weeks looking up at the sky. We’ve seen sunny days, snowy days, and even dusty days, but recently our focus has been on the clouds! Clouds are made of large groups of water droplets or ice crystals that are so light they float on the air. The wind moves the clouds along in the sky and can even change them into different shapes.
Ask your kids what they see in the clouds? Your child’s imagination is one of their best forms of entertainment. If they’re having trouble identifying images, just give them a little more direction. Play a game where you are looking for dinosaurs or maybe for all the animals you might find in the zoo, bring along a notebook to keep a cloud journal, or play “Eye-Spy”. Maybe you’ll even spot Superman or Spiderman!
Of course, this is also the perfect opportunity for education outside of the classroom. Encourage your child to ask questions about what he or she sees in the sky, and then hunt for the answers together when you get back home. You could even take a future trip to the library for more resources. The topic could be anything from airplanes to birds to the solar system. Next time you’re outside, take a seat, relax, look up, and watch the clouds go by. What do you see in the clouds? Participating in this leisurely past time is a great way to relax with your family and best of all, it’s free!

Sunshine and Lightning students are happy to announce we’re moving away from the Dolch Sight Words (although we will continue to practice now and again) and moving more full-time into blending, using our phonetic awareness skills.
One thing is to memorize, another is to ‘spell-out’…and while both are important, reading a book while having to spell-out words is often more engaging and rewarding!
We are practicing reading in small groups and independently, so the children get both the support they need, along with building up their reading self-esteem. Feel free to practice reading at home as this strengthens their skills and builds their self-confidence too.
To take advantage of library time, encourage your child to borrow books that either you can read to them, or they can read themselves. Dr. Seuss books are (almost) everyone’s favorite…they are fun, full of rhymes, and have many words the children can recognize!!

As part of our Easter celebration, KinStar
students from grades 3 to 8 have been busy gathering lots of different materials to try and construct a unique contraption that will protect their eggs as they drop them from the 1st floor, then the 2nd floor, then the 3rd floor windows. Will any of the eggs make it up to the 4th floor?? We’ll find out on Tuesday, April 6th, when the team winners from each grade compete one more time to find out which team has constructed the best device to protect their eggs. We hope to see some ‘eggcellent’ inventions!!!

Adults often say that childhood years are the best years of your life.
Today I want to have a little fun with why this may indeed be true, but how
actually it all comes down to the circumstances into which we are born.
As a baby, life can be a breeze. You can eat, sleep, laugh, cry…and whatever you do, adults love you! You can draw all over the walls of your room, and hey– you’re a budding Picasso! You can burp loudly….and they pat you on the back and say “Good Boy!”
You can make a messy nappy…and hey – what a star you are! As you get older, you can play, travel,
do sport, study- and someone else pays the bills, cooks the food and buys the clothes. Life is great!
HOWEVER, please take time to consider all those kids who are less fortunate than we are here at Kinstar. Many children, in many countries, are born into poverty. They wear rags, have no food and sometimes no homes. They aren’t worried about missing the next episode of Hannah Montana – they are worried about where they can get the next scrap of food. Sometimes, natural disasters, like the recent earthquakes in Chile and Haiti, wipe out parents, and children are left without a Mum or Dad.
Many kids never get the chance to have any education – some are even forced to work in factories for many hours every day. So, my conclusion is that being a kid is NOT always FAB. Some children
are lucky and some are not. We should be so grateful for what we have here and try to help those around the world who are less fortunate. Maybe in my next speech I can talk about that!
Thank you.

The fourth graders, along with the rest of the school, have had a busy few weeks preparing for the Spelling Bee and the English Speaking competition. Congratulations to the two representatives from the fourth grade who made it to the Spelling Bee:
Yue Qui and Jordan!!!
They represented the fourth grade in the school-wide Spelling Bee that was held on March 12th in the auditorium. Also, congratulations to all the students who tried hard to win the fourth grade competition! Also, congratulations to Téa and Yue Qi who represented the fourth grade in the speech competition. Also, John and Dari wrote and shared fantastic speeches and made it to the second round. Jordan rounded out the top five, and was voted number one by the fourth and fifth grades but could not make the final as he was in Malaysia for a soccer tourney. His sister, Tazmin, read his speech at the competition (and did a fantastic job)! Great job to everyone who worked hard!!!!!

The last two months have brought many large projects, assignments and activities to the
Grade 7 classroom. A large portion of those assignments have been geared towards the completion of a Grade 7 Research Project. Each student has selected an “influential person in history” and for the past couple of weeks has been scouring the internet, books, magazines, and numerous other sources,
in order to write his or her paper. From Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. to Barrack Obama,
students have been delving into the lives of some very interesting characters.

Besides English Language Arts, science class has landed Grade 7 in the middle of earthquake country as they study the how’s and why’s of earth’s amazing geological forces. For the past three weeks
students have been tracking daily occurrences of earthquakes across the world, discovering just how
active this planet we live on really is. Finally, a congratulations goes out to the Grade 7 spelling bee winners, Alice and Jocelyn as well as the Grade 7 speech competition winners, Yuhan and Jocelyn. All of Grade 7 worked extremely hard in preparing for both competitions and deserve a “pat on the back” for all their effort. Miss Damberger

In Grade 8 Mathematics we are exploring the use of new technology for solving problems. That’s right, we are learning how to use graphing calculators! We have learned how to solve complex equations, how to solve trigonometric equations and even how to graph functions. Many of the students even devised how to graph “Spaghetti” on their calculators. If you want to know how to, just ask an 8th grader.
In Grade 8 Language Arts, we recently had two separate competitions.
First we had a spelling bee. It was a close competition and Jason Gervais came out on top as our champion!
He and Michael Fu represented Grade 8 in the Kinstar Spelling Bee.
In our other competition, Jeffery Leung came out on top as our public speaking Champion.
His speech was about how the world would be different if we could do anything, but at the same time we must be kind and thankful. Jeffery and Jason both represented Grade 8 at the Kinstar Speech
Exhibition.
So, please give special congratulations to Jason, Michael, and Jeffery on their accomplishments.

The Terracotta Army is the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shi Huang the First Emperor of China. The terracotta figures, dating from 210 BC, were discovered in 1974 by some local farmers near Xi'an, Shaanxi province, China near the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. The figures vary in height (183–195 cm - 6 ft–6 ft 5in), according to their role, the tallest being the generals. The figures include warriors, chariots, horses, officials, acrobats, strongmen, and musicians. Current estimates are that in the three pits containing the Terracotta Army there were over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which are still buried in the pits…

Who lived in a pineapple under
the sea? Sponge-bob-squarepants!
Did you know that Spongebob didn’t just stay under the sea? He was naughty so he and Patrick kept traveling around the world, he even visited the Terra Cotta Warriors! What a naughty sponge! I wonder if he and Patrick bought a ticket or not.
Should they buy children tickets or adult ones?

The Rainbow class students took advantage of what could be Beijing’s last snowfall for the season and went outside to play in the snow last Monday at recess. After playing around in the snow for awhile during our outdoor activity time we then worked together as a group to build a giant snow castle!
The children searched the playing field for the fresh snow perfect for packing into giant snowballs. As they rolled and rolled the packed snow, their snowballs became so large that two or three children had to push it together to get the snow ball to move!
Some were so big that they needed a strong teacher to move it! In the end the snow castle was almost as tall as the children and long enough for all the children of Rainbow to hide behind! The boys and girls felt very proud for the accomplishment of their castle.
They learned about teamwork and also practiced their rolling and building skills in this fun and educational recess activity!
Sadly, the warm sun came out and it was nearly all melted down to nothing by the next day, but now the children know how to build working together, so for the next snow storm, whenever it may be, they will be ready!

The Rainbow class students took advantage of what could be Beijing’s last snowfall for the In music class, the middle school students have begun to learn about the different musical periods. In European-
Western music the terms
Renaissance, baroque,
classical, romantic,
and twentieth century are used to describe each of the musical
styles.
Over the past month the students have
explored the musical characteristics and famous composers
from the baroque and romantic Periods.
One of the most influential composers of the baroque period was Jean Baptiste Lully. Through the analyzing of Lully’s “Marche”, students were introdu-ced to ternary form as well as common characteristics of baroque music. Most baroque music has steady, rhythmic patterns and conveys a single mood or emotion.
In contrast, romantic music is characterized by long, complex melodies which are used to express feelings and emotions. Composers of the romantic period wrote instrumental works that told a story without words.
The students analyzed “Farandole” by the French romantic composer Georges Bizet. Within this selection the students explored the changes between major and minor tonality and the use of extreme dynamics Bizet used to create the romantic style.
Over the next couple of months the middle school students will continue to study musical periods.

Teacher Reviews:As you can see, every passage is short. But it is hard for the Grade 1 and Grade 2 CSL Students. First we learn Chinese pinyin then the Chinese characters, and they try their best to say a sentence . Now they can write a short passage . How difficult it is! I am so proud of my students!
I do believe with everyone's encouragement, they will make more progress! CSL: Emily Yu

Do you know how food can affect you? Do you know that food can change how you look and how you feel? Do you know about the diseases that people can get if they eat a poor diet? Do you know if you are eating a nutritious and balanced diet? Can you read and understand food labels? These are important questions that the Grade 5 class explored in a unit on Health & Nutrition.
In this unit, grade 5 students had the opportunity to try out a few different jobs.

First the students became nutritionists and planned a balanced diet for a children’s camp by following the food pyramid. We then changed jobs and became doctors to diagnose patients suffering from various deficiency diseases and created a treatment plan to help the patients become healthy again. Students searched through magazines to show what foods belong in the different food groups and the nutrients found in them.
Everyone then
created pamphlets to teach others about the importance of nutrition.
If you are looking for the answers to the above questions, then please drop by the grade 5 classroom and have a look at some of the amazing pamphlets & projects created by the students!!
We hope that everyone will eat a healthy
and well balanced diet!!
